Innovation and entrepreneurship

Alfred Arias, Team Coach de l’MBA-URV.

Early this year, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop on innovation and entrepreneurship. I would like to share some insights, thoughts and reflections that left a mark and footprint on how the organizations should promote the behaviour of their people to become more innovative and entrepreneur in the daily work to be successful in the current market and economic environment:

  • Be positive.
  • No fear, but able to deal with uncertainty / failure and risk.
  • Show passion.
  • Be influential (act as a catalyst).
  • Assertiveness.
  • Self-motivatig (never quit).
  • Be challenging (in a constructive way the status quo).
  • Practical thinker (able to “marry” creativity vs. feasibility).
  • Curious (imagination is as important as information).
  • Long term oriented.
  • Be a great connector.
  • Excellent listener.
  • Do the right things and not just doing things right.
  • Act as a radar and be open-minded to scout new opportunities:

    • “The future is happening somewhere. We just have to find it.” (Carl Johnson)
    • The day before the breakthrough, it was a crazy idea. After than, it was obvious.
    • Motivate and inspire people to “keep the wheel rolling on”.
    • With the project we lead.
    • Being eager to collaborate with new ideas.
    • Being convinced that innovation worth.
  • Be able to navigate across the two worlds:

    • Operational world (procedures, routine, rules, known situations) leading to success.
    • Innovation world (speculate, experiment, develop, constructive review) leading to opportunity for change.
  • Identify which is our innovation profile:

    • Learner. Gather new sources of information and inspiration.
    • Organizer. Even the best ideas must compe te for time, attention and resources.
    • Builder. Apply insights from the Learners and channel empowerment from the organizers to “make things happen”.
